Character Name: Shepherd, Thomas

Character Appearance:
Character Age: 19
Pick A Number: 89; 852

Canon Setting: Tommy comes from a world of superheroes. While in most ways it resembles a modern world, epic battles between superheroes and villains are on the news every day, politicians run on platforms of mutant registration or freedom, and children at recess claim they cannot wait until the day their powers manifest. Even temp agencies look for people with superpowers to do specific jobs.

Tommy grew up an hour from New York City, the epicenter of American superhero activity, in Springfield, New Jersey, so he was steeped in the culture that came along with seeing superheroes on a regular basis – and dealing with the battlefields they left behind. On the Marvel-616 Earth, extremes are the normal. It’s either a great day or the world is about to end. Mutant juvenile delinquents like Tommy don’t just deal with parole officers; they deal with being sent to high-security detention facilities that are covers for secret government programs to change them into obedient weapons.

Once he became a superhero himself, instead of just being affected by it, he became part of it. Normal life became even more boring as his world got filled with aliens, super-villains, and the all-important goal of saving the world. He got used to a hectic life, surrounded by other teenagers with similar superpowers; the hum-drum normalcy of trying to figure out their place in life was constantly interrupted by the global threats, or just some guy with super-strength trying to rob a bank. Being kidnapped by an existential horror is not entirely shocking; while a bit terrifying, it seems to be something that comes with the job. Everyone's been kidnapped, brainwashed, or killed at least once.

Character History: Thomas Shepherd at the Marvel Wiki

Character Personality:

Tommy first comes off as brash, impulsive, and irreverent. He plays up the identity of the cool kid who doesn’t care about anyone and certainly doesn’t need them, though the opposite is the truth. When one gets past his defensive walls, he can be extremely kind and caring, though as soon as he is angered or hurt they go right back up.

At his best, he is cheerful, funny, and observant. He will notice if someone is feeling down, and can prove himself a good listener. He is also brave in a fight, and the first to try and get innocents out of the way. He gets along well with children, and with those he considers his peers he can be a strong team player.

At his worst, he is moody, defensive, and irritable. He has problems with authority figures, and deep trust issues. When they give him commands, he will instantly push back, resenting any illusion of trying to control him. Even when authority figures treat him kindly he gets uncomfortable, not being able to fully trust their kindness is genuine.

Morally, he leans more towards chaotic good. He had a troubled past coupled with a criminal history, and he has never quite been apologetic for it. Though he now subscribes very heavily to the ideals of a superhero, he is the team member that will suggest that a criminal act like stealing might be the way to go to get something necessary done, and he has a vicious streak that can come out in a fight. However, he has been described by other members of his team as the biggest superhero of all of them; he puts his heart and soul into doing good, and is unwilling to quit even when everyone else does.

Character Powers & Skills:

Powers
Superspeed: Tommy’s most notable power is his super-speed. To others, this translates at him being able to run (and do other tasks) at an extreme speed. For himself, he experiences the world as if everyone else is going at an extremely slow pace.

This comes with some secondary effects: he’s much more durable than a normal human being, as well as stronger and more agile. He also has some sort of aura that protects other people and objects such as his clothes from the impact forces he experiences if he is carrying them.

Molecular Acceleration: Tommy is able to accelerate the molecules of matter around him to various degrees. He’s shown an ability to accelerate his own molecules along with the molecules of those standing near him enough that they can pass through solid objects. If he accelerates them faster, which he has shown the ability to do both by shaking an object and by air vibrations from a distance, he can accelerate atoms to the point of molecular decay and cause them to explode. The largest he has been able to explode at once time was the United Nations building in New York.

Magic Sensing: Tommy has mentioned an ability to “feel magic-types,” such as his mother, Wanda Maximoff. It is unknown to what extent this ability is able to be used. It has been my practice in RP to ask muns of characters who may be magically inclined if they will allow Tommy to recognize their magic, and, if they do not wish him to, to write it off as a type he can’t recognize.

Skill-Set
Petty crime: Though not overly stated, Tommy does have some skills that come along with his criminal history: experience picking locks, breaking into buildings (including the Avengers Mansion on one occasion), and pick-pocketing.

CHARACTER SAMPLES.

First Person POV: Sample

Third Person POV:
Tommy did not recognize the young man who came up to him, but, then again, he recognized almost no one at this party. Hell, he did not remember how he came to be at this party or, for that matter, when it became the New Year. The explanation he got from Billy’s blustering was that he had been kidnapped by some existential horror or something, and that he had been missing for a few months.
Awkward.
But back to the young man. Tommy’s initial reaction to being approached was to ask him if he wanted to dance. Sure, he’d rather a pretty lady, but the guy wasn’t bad looking. When the stranger shook his head and declined with some sense of urgency, Tommy stopped to pay attention. Something was up.
“Your world is in danger,” the man said, which tensed every muscle along Tommy’s spine. “Will you help save it?”

“Yes.” The answer was out of his mouth before he even thought twice about it. If asked later about it, he would say that he is a superhero, saving the world is his job; there were too often situations where time mattered, so why would he have stopped to quiz the guy?
It was not until he was being handed his introduction to the CDC that he realized he should have really asked for clarification.

CHARACTER ITEMS.

Pick a Team:

Green: Tommy’s time in the Young Avengers makes him an experienced fighter. He has been on many missions with the Young Avengers, fighting enemies such as supervillains and aliens. In a fight, he normally takes a protective role, getting those in danger out of it, disarming opponents, and using his speed to get into the position most needed at the time.

Red: Tommy is surprisingly observant and can pick up when something is wrong with someone. He also has a protective nature, especially when it comes to a team he identifies with. These both would make him a good candidate for policing internal threats to the team. Though he would be useless for deep cover, as he is not subtle, he would be a good candidate for jobs that require quick, independent reactions. He is very willing to put himself in danger and push himself until he gets the job done.

Reason for Joining the CDC: It was easy to get Tommy to say yes. “The world is in danger; can you help?” There was no hesitation, no pause to get clarification. The whole explanation about planet-destruction came later. It wasn’t something that sat well with Tommy; he didn’t want to blow apart planets, but then again, he had his own planet to think about. Though he will struggle with the CDC’s missions for as long as he is a part of it, at the end of the day, he’s going to go with protecting his own.

Mission Freebie: He would not think to have asked for one, and would have trouble deciding on one should he be.

Personal Item or Weapon: His Avengers Identicard. This is an identification card that was given to him by Captain America, denoting that he is part of the Avengers. It is a mini computer that can act as a recording device, a calculator, or send out a signal that it can be tracked by. It can also be used to communicate with other Avengers, if they have their card.
